Something a little crazy
I want to invite you to be a part of something that is a little crazy.
Perhaps even more than a little crazy.
But I feel PRETTY convinced that no matter how crazy it is, it’s more than doable.
I’m gonna fill out some details here, but if you’re a TL;DR kind of person, scroll to the bottom!!
About a year ago I started talking about wanting to leverage the excitement around turning 40 into doing something meaningful for someone else. To celebrate surviving 4 decades in this crazy world, I decided I want to invite people who have journeyed with me in this life to pool some funds and pay to build a home for a family who currently doesn’t have one. So last summer, I started talking about trying to raise about $13,000CAD so I could partner with Homes of Hope in Tijuana, Mexico to build a house.
All the while, I knew the realities of a global pandemic might create some speed bumps along the way, and they did! Instead of going to build the home this summer, 2021, we’ve deferred the trip to summer 2022. Not only did we have to defer the trip, but fundraising has been challenging when I have had such little concrete information about when the trip would take place.
I feel really encouraged by the amount I’ve been able to raise so far and I’m super grateful for all who have contributed in large and small ways.
That said, I’ve still got quite a ways to go. Unfortunately, due to increased material costs and other financial factors, Homes of Hope has had to increase the costs to build the home and have asked if I could pay the new rates, rather than the ones I had committed to. I feel pretty confident we can do that.
So here’s the crazy idea I have.
In 14 days I will officially leave my 30s behind me. Ooof, there’s enough in that statement I may write a whole other post about how “turning 40” doesn’t phase me, but being “in my 40s” feels altogether different! But for now, I want to use my birthday as a goal marker!
My hope and prayer is that over the next approximately 14 days I will be able to raise at least $10,000CAD!
It has felt crazy to say that out loud, but it seems even crazier to type it.
How will I do this you ask?
I will unashamedly reach out to and contact as many people I can I think of and invite them to give anywhere from $50 to $5000 towards this goal! More, or less, is obviously acceptable, but why not set some amounts!? I figure I know a lot of people. So even if a lot say they can’t participate right now, I’m guessing a lot will think it could be fun to be a part of a crazy challenge goal like this.
So consider this my early plug… I will be reaching out via text, phone calls, emails, social media, and whatever other means I can think of to as many people as I can think of!!
I’ve updated that section of my blog that describes how to give and specifically how to give if you are Canadian and would like to charitable gift tax receipt. But of course, any questions, let me know!
In the mean time, get ready to hear about this a lot over the next two weeks!
And please know, I feel so blessed and encouraged to have all of you a part of my life. Without the awesome community that has been a part of my life these last 4 decades I would in no way be the man I am today and I would have no hope of stepping into such a fun challenge!
This is gonna be fun!!
All the details for the trip, including how to give now can be found on the main House Build site.
TL;DR Version
I’m gonna try to raise $10,000CAD by my birthday.
How: I’m going to call/text/email/message as many people as I can think of and ask them to contribute or commit to contributing!
Expect to hear from me!
